Ch3 Flashcards
Water vapor
Water in the form of a gas
Weather
The condition of earth’s atmosphere at a particular time and place.
Atmosphere
Is the envelope of gases that surround the planet
Density
The amount of mass in a given volume of air
Barometer
Instrument used to measure air pressure
Air pressure
Is the result of the weight of a column of air
Mercury barometer
A barometer with mercury in it
Android beromiter
Has an air tight metal chamber
Altitude
Area above sea level
Wind
Is the movement of air parallel to earth surface
Local winds
Winds that blow over short distances
Global winds
Are winds that blow steadily from specific directions over long distances
Anemometer
A tool used to measure wind speed
Windchill factor
The increased cooling that wind can cause
Sea breeze
Is a local wind that blows from a ocean or lake
Land breeze
The flow of wind from land to the sea
Latitude
The distance between the equator
Coriolis effect
The way earths rotation makes wind curve
Electro magnetic waves
Energy from the sun that travels to the Earth
Radiation
The direct transfer of energy by electro magnetic waves
Inferred radiation
It’s not visible by humans and has wave lengths that are longer than wavelengths for red lights ( felt as heat )
Ultra violet radiation
Invisible form of energy with wave lengths that are shorter than wave lengths for violet light
Troposphere
The lower layer of the atomasphere
Mesosphere
Middle layer of the atmosphere
