Ch.4 Carbon & the Molecular... Flashcards
(5 cards)
An adenine-containing nucleoside triphosphate that releases free energy when phosphate bonds are hydrolyzed. This energy is used to drive endergonic reactions in cells
Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)
An organic molecule consisting only of carbon & hydrogen
Hydrocarbons
(–OH)A hydrogen atom is bonded to an oxygen atom, which in turn is bonded to the carbon skeleton of the organic molecule (don’t confuse w/ OH-)
Ex: Ethanol
Hydroxyl
(>CO) consists of a carbon atom joined to an oxygen atom by a double bond; contains aldehydes & ketones
Ex: Acetone;Propanal
Carbonyl
(–COOH) a chemical group present in organic acids & consisting of a single carbon atom double-bonded to an oxygen atom & also bonded to a hydroxyl group
Ex: Acetic Acid
Carboxyl
