Ch.5+6 Flashcards
(10 cards)
Definition of the word Skeleton
A solid or fluid system permitting muscles to be stretched back to their original length following a contraction. Such a system may or may not have protective and supportive functions as well
What activities are muscles capable of?
The can shorten and relax but can’t actively extend themselves
Antagonize
Triceps and biceps taking turn stretching each other back to pre contraction length ( happen with other muscles in your body too)
What are the basic requirements of a hydrostatic skeleton
- the presence of a cavity housing an incompressible fluid that changes uniformly in all directions
- that this cavity is surrounded by a flexible outer body membrane, so that the outer body was can be deformed
- that the volume of fluid in the cavity remains constant
- that the animal be capable of forming temporary attachments to the substrate, if progressive locomotion is to occur on or within a substrate
- the presence of a deformable but leastic covering or the presence of at least two sets of muscles that can act against each other
Defining characteristics of Cnidarians
1) secretions of complex intracrllilar organelles called cnidae (nematocytst)
2) planula larvae in the life cycle
What are the two different body plans found among cnidarians?
- Medusa = also referred to as jellyfish and resembles a gelatinous saucer or upside-down cup with tentacles and generally swims
- Polyp = has a tubular body and is generally stationary
What is the role of the amoebocytes in the mesoglea?
May play roles in digestion, nutrient transport and storage, wound repair and antibacterial defense
What are some functions of Cnidae
Function in food collection, Defense and to some extent locomotion
Defining characteristics of Scyphozoa
Asexual replication via strobilation
