articles of incorporation
A legal document, filed with the government, that incorporates a business.
asset value
A corporate share’s portion of the corporation’s net worth, represented by its assets minus its liabilities.
bear market
A stock market under the influence of traders expecting prices to fall, an expectation that is usually self-fulfilling.
blue-chip stock
Shares of large corporations that are commonly regarded as safe and stable investments.
bond
A financial asset that represents a debt owed by a corporation to the holder, on which interest is paid by the corporation.
book value
The value of a share when it was first issued; also known as face value.
brain drain
Emigration of Canadians talented in research and management to the US and other countries.
branch-plant economy
A somewhat censorious term applied to Canada in the past, referring to the numerous branch plants of foreign multinationals operating here, particularly US ones.
bull market
A market influenced by investors expecting prices to rise, an expectation that is usually self-fulfilling.
capital
A factor of production that refers to machinery, factories, warehouses, and equipment used to produce goods and services.
commodity
A raw or semi-processed good such as minerals, lumber, or grain.
conglomerate
A group of companies involved in different industries, but controlled by a central management group.
co-operative
A business owned equally by its members who have a common relationship, goal, or economic purpose.
corporate alliance
A group of companies that agree to operate as a single company while retaining separate ownership.
corporation
A business firm recognized legally as a separate entity in its own right.
Crown corporation
A business owned by the federal government.
dividend
Corporation profits distributed to shareholders on a per-share basis.
Dow Jones Industrial Average
The most widely known indicator of stock market activity based upon the daily closing prices of 30 blue-chip US corporations.
firm
Units of ownership engaged in business activities.
futures market
A market for commodities that are bought and sold for future delivery.
government enterprise
A business that provides services owned by the federal, provincial, or municipal government.
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita
The total value of a nation’s goods and services divided by its population.
high-tech
Industries that develop, provide, or use highly complex technology.
