Ch6 The respiratory system Flashcards
(23 cards)
Breathing in
Inhaling
Breathing out
Exhaling
Respiration
The release of energy from food
External respiration
The process in which organisms take in oxygen for respiration and get rid of CO2 and water which are the waste product of respiration
Gaseous exchange
When oxygen from the air is taken into the body and CO2 from the body is released
Nose
Takes in and filters air with tiny hairs
Epiglottis
Prevents food from going into the trachea
Trachea
Takes air to the lungs
Bronchus
Carries air into a lung
Bronchiole
Narrow tubes that carry into the alveoli
Lung
Gaseous exchange
Alveolus
Tiny sacs for gaseous exchange
Diaphragm
A muscle that controls the volume of the chest
Intercostal muscles
Move the chest during breathing
Ribs
Bones that protect the lungs
Pelura
Membrane that helps the lungs to move easily
Inhale
Diaphragm and intercostal muscles contract
Exhale
Intercostal muscles and diaphragm relax
Pulmonary
To do with the lungs
Gaseous exchange
When oxygen in the Alveolus moves through its walls and into the blood and the CO2 in the surrounding pillory moves into the Alveolus
Test for CO2
CO2 reacts with calcium hydroxide which is also known as limewater and turns milky
Breathing rate
The measure of how many times someone inhales and exhales in one minute
Average breaths per minute
12 to 17
