Republic
Form of government in which power rests with citizens who have the right to vote for their leaders.
Paticians
Wealthy landowners who held most of the power.
Plebeians
Common farmers, artisans, and merchants who made up the majority of the population
Tribunes
Representatives that protect the rights of the plebeians from unfair acts of the patrician officials.
Consuls
Officials that are like kings, who commanded the army and directed the government.
Senate
The aristocratic branch of Rome’s government. That contains both legislative and administrative functions in the republic.
Dictator
A leader who had absolute power to make laws and command the army.
Legions
large military inits that Roman soldiers were organized into.
Punic Wars
Long struggling war between Rome and Carthage.
Hannibal
29-year-old Carthaginian general/ military strategist of Carthage.
Civil War
Conflict between groups within the same country,
Julius Caesar
Military leader that joined forces with Crassus, a wealthy roman, and Pompey, a popular general.
Triumvirate
A group of three rulers.

Period of peace and prosperity. (Roman peace)
Jesus
A jew who was born in Bethlehem who preached, taught, did good works, and reportedly preformed miracles.
Apostles
Jesus’ disciples, or pupils. 12 men that written some of the Gospels.
Paul
An apostle, who had a huge influence on Christianity’s development.
Diaspora
Dispersal of jews by driving them from their homeland into exile.
Constantine
Roman emperor who fought three rivals for leadership of Rome.
Bishop
A priest who supervised several local churches.
Peter
An apostle who had traveled to Rome from Jerusalem and became the first bishop there.
Pope
Father or head of the Christian church.
Inflation
A drastic drop in the value of money coupled with a rise in price.
