ch7 Flashcards
(15 cards)
what element do organic compounds always have?
carbon
is crude oil a finite resource?
yes it is which means it will run out
first four alkanes
methane
ethane
propane
butane
what is crude oil a mixture of?
very large numbers of hydrocarbons which are molecules of hydrogen and carbon only
small chain hydrocarbon properties
low viscosity
extremely flammable
low boiling point-first 4 hydrocarbons are gases
what does viscosity tell us?
the thickness of the liquid
fluids with high viscosity flow slowly
long chain hydrocarbon properties
high viscosity-flow very slowly
not very flammable-very difficult to burn
very high boiling points
what does flammability tell us?
tell us how easily a hydrocarbon can combust (burn)
what is the boiling point?
it is the temperature when the liquid turns into a gas
differences between cracking and distillation
cracking involves a catalyst and distillation doesn’t
distillation does not involve a chemical change whereas cracking doesn’t
what type of reaction is cracking?
decomposition
what does a fraction do at a different level?
condenses
why do the fractions separate?
because they have different boiling points
what reagent is used for testing for alkenes?
bromine water
how is crude oil separated into fractions
heat or vaporise
temperature gradient (cooler at the top and hotter at the bottom)
vapour condenses depending on the boiling point of fraction
