Aspiration
to inhale something into your lungs other than air. (i.e. vomit, water; prevented with LATERAL POSITION)
Asthma
usually due to allergen; constriction of bronchial tubes & increased mucus (treated with NSAIDs & Corticosteroid inhalers)
Atelectasis
collapsed lung… due to airway obstruction, hypoventilation, fluid buildup (pneumothorax due to trauma)
Bronchitis
inflammation of the bronchus
Bronchogenic Carcinoma (lung cancer)
a malignant tumor that originates in the bronchi
Bronchospasm
constriction of the bronchus
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
category of respritory diseases
Common Cold
viral infection of the respiratory tract of Dx as URI
Croup
viral infection of the larynx… usually small children… has a characteristic “barking cough”
Cystic Fibrosis (CF)
genetic condition where your body overproduces mucous everywhere
Emphysema
1 type of COPD… alveolar walls develop scar tissue… why?… same as cancer
Hay Fever
allergies
Empyema
pus in the pleural cavity
Influenza
med term for flu, caused by a virus
Pleural Effusion
fluid buildup in pleural space; can cause atelectasis
Pneumonia
fluid in lungs due to illness/aspiration; illness can be viral, bacterial, fungal, or chemical
Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
blockage of the blood supply by a blood clot to the lungs. usually post-op.
Sleep Apnea
condition in which you have short periods of apnea during sleep
Sputum
a collection of mucus coughed up from the lung. usually sent to lab to investigate/phlegm
Strep Throat
bacterial infection of the pharynx… caused by streptococcus bacteria
Tuberculosis (TB)
Bacteria that infects lungs; destroys lung tissue slowly… can produce spores
RSV
Respiratory Syncytial Virus
