Ch.8 Chemcial Change Flashcards
Physical Properties
The properties that you can observe or measure directly by using all of your 5 senses - Seeing, Hearing, Smelling, Touching and Tasting
Chemical Properties
The properties used to describe a substance combines with another substance to form a new chemical or how a substance breaks up into 2 or more substances
Flammability
A indicator of how easily a substance catches fire
Reactivity
The measure of how likely a particular metal is to take part in a displacement reaction
Toxicity to
The danger to your health caused when poisonous substances combine with chemicals in your body to produce new substances and damaging effects
Reaction Time
The speed at which a reaction takes place
Catalyst
The chemical that helps to start or speed up a chemical reaction
Enzymes
The special chemicals that speed up reactions but are themselves not used up in the reaction
Rusting
A brown substance formed when iron reacts with oxygen and water
Corrosion
A chemical reaction that wears away a metal. Air, water or chemicals in air and water, as well as many household substances, can be corrosive. Many acids and other corrosive substances are dangerous.
Surface Protection
coating over a metal surface to prevent corrosion
Galvanising
protecting a metal by covering it with a more reactive metal that will corrode first
Burning
Combining a substance such as flint with oxygen in a flame
Oxidation
The chemical reaction involving the loss of electrons by a substance
Fossil Fuel
Any remains, impression, or trace of an animal or plant of a former geological age; evidence of life in the past
