Ch.9 - Stoichiometry Flashcards

Q

What is a mole?

A

A mole is the amount of substance that contains as many particles as there are in 12g of a carbon-12 isotope. A mole has 6x10^23 particles(Avogadro’s constant). A mole of any gas occupies 22.4l at STP and 24l at RTP.

Q

What is stoichiometry?

A

Stoichiometry is the study of amounts of reactants used and amounts of products formed by a chemical reaction. It is based on the law of conservation of mass.

Q

What is the theoretical, actual and percent yield of a chemical reaction?

A

The theoretical yield is the maximum amount of product that can be produced given the amount of reactant.
The actual yield is the amount of product actually produces when the chemical reaction is carried out in an experiment.
The percent yield of a product is the ratio of the actual yield expressed as a percentage.

Q

What is the limiting reactant?

A

The limiting reactant determines the amount of product formed. All other reactants are present in excess. It is completely used up in reaction.
