Chain Drives Flashcards
How are chain drives operated?
With tension (teeth on driving sprocket engage chain)
How many theeth are required for effective engagement?
Only a few
Advantages of chain drives?
can easily be cut to length
Available in limitless different variations
Positive engagement - No slipping between driving and driven shaft
Flexibility
Long operating life
Operate in hostile environments
Unlimited shelf life
Can replace without disturbing the equipment
Can handle large HP loads and large speeds
Disadvantages of chain drives?
Higher operating noise levels then belts
Will eventually wear out and potential for chain to stretch
Lower speeds then belts
Have to change sprocket with the chain
What does pin link plate connect?
Outside plate connects pins together
What does roller link plate connect?
Roller to roller
What is pitch?
Center line of pin to center line of next pin
The larger the pitch is relation to what?
Larger link size and higher load rating but slower speeds
Smaller the pitch is related to what?
Less load more speed quite operations
What is a multi strand small pitch chain used for?
High speed high load
What locking device does a master link use?
Spring clip ( closed end towards rotation)
What locking device does a half link use?
Cotter pin (long side bended at 45)
Do self lube roller chains need lubricant?
No will wash out the lube that is already there
How do you know it’s heavy chain?
Link plate thickness equal to next size larger.
Bigger diameter pin equal to next size bigger of chain
Where do you use heavy chain?
Space and weight limitations prohibit the use of larger size.
Also has higher working load rating and withstand higher shock loads
