Chaney et al. (2004) Flashcards
(26 cards)
Who were the participants?
32 children from Australia aged between 1.5 and 6 years.
What berating condition do they children in this study have?
They are asthmatic.
What were the children given and why were they given it?
They were given a Funhaler to give the children an incentive to use their inhaler more frequently to manage their asthma.
What was included in the Funhaler?
It had a toy - there was a spinning disk and whistle, which was activated when the children exhaled.
According to this study what has a huge impact on behaviour?
Environment a child is brought up in.
What type of asthma pump were the children previously using?
Standard AeroChamber or Breath-a-Tech inhalers.
How were the participants contacted?
Recruited via their GP or paediatrician. Parents were contacted by phone and then visited at home.
What were preschool children given with the Funhaler?
Preschool children were given a face mask, which is usual in inhalers for young children.
How many girls and boys were the participants in the study.
22 boys and 10 girls.
What was the average duration for asthma of the participants?
Average duration of 2.2 years.
What kind of experimental design was used?
It was a repeated measures field experiment.
When were the parents given questionnaires to complete?
Both before and after their child used the Funhaler.
What percentage rate of responses to the questionnaires was there?
There was a 100 per cent response rate.
What kind of data was obtained?
Quantitative data.
What did the quantitative data show?
Problems experienced when using the normal inhaler were lessened with the Funhaler.
What benefits were there for the children of using the Funhaler?
Much less dislike or phobia.
What was one conclusion drawn from the study?
Would appear that the Funhaler led to an increase in use, and correct use at that.
What is another conclusion drawn from the study?
Parents tended to be less likely to give up and resort to a nebuliser if they were using the Funhaler.
What type of experiment was used in this study?
Field experiment.
Why was it a repeated measures design?
As the researchers assessed the children’s use of their regular inhaler and compared this against their use of the Funhaler.
How was data collected in this study?
Through self-report, both through the questionnaires and the telephone interviews.
How standardised was the procedure?
Even though it was a field experiment there were many aspects that were standardised. The questionnaire was the same for each participant, and the length of time using the Funhaler was the same.
How long did the participants use the Funhaler for?
2 weeks.
Suggest another area that Chaney et al is linked to?
Operant conditioning.
