What is a ghetto?

A

Many black Americans migrated from the old slave states of the South to urban areas of the North.
Many of them lived in specific areas of cities e.g Harlem in New York and these became known as ghettos.
Migration of black Americans from South to urban areas in North (segregation was normal in society then)

What changed in ghettos (population and conditions)?

A
  • In 1914, 50 000 black people lived in Harlem and by 1930 it was 165 000 (rents in area doubled)
  • problems rose e.g over-crowding, substandard homes + living conditions (shows limits to prosperity)
