Change in the texts Flashcards
(3 cards)
Which texts demonstrate negative/ postive outcomes of change for the individuals affected/ for society?
Tess: negative outcome
Tempest: positive outcome (especially for Prospero, Miranda, Ferdinand - less so for Antonio, who gives the Dukedom nack to Prospero, bis brother)
Manifesto: positive outcome –> Evaristo uses her struggles to grow –> she creates her own change
What do the texts tell you about the power/ ability to influence that different levels if social class possess, over the change that occurs?
Tess:
Tess –> lower class, helpless, can do little to nothing about the events that cause her suffering, that cause the changes in her life
Alec –> more respected family, wealthier, and causes the change, and experiences no negative consequences as a result of his actions
–> shows that generally, the characters of lower class have little/ no effect/ power on the change and events that occur, and are more often the ones that suffer, while those who possess more power drive the change and don’t suffer
Tempest:
Prospero –> possesses magical powers - is at an advantage, drives the change and gets what he wanted
Alonso, Antonio & co. –> regular people, caught in a vulnerable state, can’t control the change, are the ones who must sacrifice something as a reult of the change
–> shows how a higher social class, ppl with more recognition, or priviledged people/ those with an advantage, can cause changes,
–> while those of lower class, with little power, are simply the victims of that change
Manifesto:
Evaristo –> responds to external situations, drives her own personal change, changes her life for the better
Society –> puts Evaristo in a position of hardship straight after birth
–> shows how majority have great influence and can cause suffering in individuals
To what extent does fate play a role in change, in the texts we have studied? How much control do the characters have over the change that occurs?
Tess: changes occur throguh external influence/ events that tess could not have prevented, and impact & change the characters
–> negatively impact Tess’ family and Tess’ life
Tempest: characters dictate the change that occurs
–> have control over it
–> can change things to their own benefit, which they do
Manifesto: Evaristo receives hardships from the prejudiced society, which she could not change, but she chose to respond to that situation, out of her control, by taking control over her own life and as a result changing herself and her life for the better
