Changes and Reactions Flashcards
Catalyst
A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction but is not one of the reactants or products.
Chemical reaction
Process that occurs when two or more substances affect each other and produce a chemical change. The substances’ molecules get rearranged to form differently.
Chemical change
Any change during a chemical reaction where a new substance is formed or energy is given off/absorbed.
Combustion
The process of something burning, or rapid combination of a substance with oxygen, involving the production of heat and light.
Exothermic
Giving off heat.
Phase
State of matter, like solid, liquid, or gas.
Volume
How much space something takes up.
Reactants
A substance undergoes change during a chemical reaction.
Products
Substances at the end of chemical reaction.
Synthesis/combination
Two substances combined to make one new substance.
Decomposition
One substance turns into two new ones.
Single exchange
A molecule or atom in a substance moves to another substance.
Double exchange
Substances exchange a molecule or atom with another substance to form two new compounds.
