The concept of place
Location- where a place is on a map, its latitude and longitude.
Locale- a setting in which everyday activities take place.
Sense of place (place meaning)- the subjective and emotional attachment to place, its meaning.
The importance of place in human life and experience
Attachment, home and identity- the depth of feelin we have for a place is influence by the depth of our knowledge and understanding of it.
Identity and place- our sense of place can be so strong that it is central to our identity.
Insider vs outsider perspectives
All places are shaped by society: people and their regular, everyday social interactions.
Experienced and media places
The representations of places that feature in the media often give contrasting images to those presented by official cartography (survey maps) or government statistics.
Genius loci
The term means “spirit of a place” and is used by professional planners to convey the idea that all places have a unique set of characteristics which new development should take account of.
Factors that contribute to the character of a place
Factors may originate from within a locality (endogenous factors) such as local stone which may be commonly used in the built environment.
From beyond the locality (exogenous factors), relating to a relationship of connection between it and other places, people or external forces.
