What does the word ‘place’ mean to you?
- place at a basic level is space invested with meaning
- an area containing personal perceptions, memories, history.
- emotions (happy, sad, angry)
Why do people interact with places differently?
- different backgrounds + perceptions (their own views)
- mental trauma maybe/opposite
What does location mean?
‘where’ a place is, for example the coordinates on a map
What does locale mean?
locale, unlike location, takes into account the effect that people have on their setting. in terms of locale; a place is shaped by the people, cultures and customers within.
What does sense of place mean?
refers to the subjective + emotional attachment people have to a place. this maybe completely different when looked at different perspectives.
What is meant by a destructive approach?
is the idea that the worlds is a set of places and each place can be studied and is distinct.
What is meant by social constructionist approach?
sees place as a product of a particular set of social processes occurring at a particular time.
What do we mean by a phenomenological approach?
is not interested in the unique characterised of a place or why it was constructed. it is interested how individuals experience the place.

Outline the concept of place?
a location found on the earth’s surface and can geolocate however has a specific meaning, perception and characteristics of which make it individual, significant and stand out. lots of different meanings + economic geog = how £ has a perception on people, political geog = levels of government that perceived people.
