Changing Places: Introduction Flashcards
(8 cards)
What did Creswell say in regards to places in 2004?
‘A place is not just a thing in the world, but a way of understanding the world.’
What is John Agnew’s definition of ‘place’?
Defines places as a ‘meaningful location’: comprised of 3 attributes
1. Location - where a place is, coordinates: this is the physical dimension (a Newtonian view)
2. Locale - consideration of the effect that people have on their setting. This suggests that a place is shaped by the people and cultures present: this is the social constructionist dimension
3. Sense of place - refers to the subjective and emotional attachment people have to a place: varies with different people: this is the phenomenological dimension
How does Yi Fu Tuan (1979) define ‘place’?
Defines ‘place’ through binary opposition from the notion of ‘space’.
Tuan posed that place is bounded, whilst space is infinite. Place is security whilst space is freedom. This follows a humanist perspective: the area outside of a defined boundary is space
How does Doreen Massey define ‘place’?
Notes that places are not enclosures with a clear inside and outside. They do not have single identities but multiple and are not frozen in time. Places are processes.
What is meant by an ‘insider perspective’?
The perspective of someone who knows a place well and is familiar with not only its topography but also its daily rhythms and events.
What is meant by an ‘outsider perspective’?
The perspective of someone who does not know a place well (i.e a visitor) or someone who is marginalised in a community such as the homeless or people from minority groups
What are some factors that determine insider/outsider status?

What is Positionality?
Attributes that affect someone’s opinion and feeling of a place
