Q

Describe one of the following examples of non-violent protests. Consider the specific purpose, responses and the extent to which it succeeded
-sit-ins
- freedom rides
- bus boycott

A

Montgomery bus boycott:
resulted in the supreme court ruling segregation on public buses as unconstitutional, helped eliminate early barriers to transportation access, started after Rosa Parkes refused to give up her seat, foundational to the civil rights movement, had a strong economic impact on the public transport system - 3/4 bus rides were African American, bus companies and Montgomery officials refused to meet those demands. Many white citizens retaliated against the African American community: King’s home was bombed, and many boycotters were threatened or fired from their jobs.

Q

Why did organisations like Black panthers and individuals like Malcon X oppose violent activism?

A

Malcolm X, the Black Panthers believed that nonviolent protests could not truly liberate black Americans or give them power over their own lives. They linked the African American liberation movement with liberation movements in Africa and Southeast Asia. They wanted to take action. Urged his fellow Black Americans to protect themselves against white aggression “by any means necessary,” due the hate of oppression
