Changing UK Lanscapes Flashcards
(17 cards)
What are the three rock types?
Igneous
Sedimentary
Metamorphic
How is sedimentary rock formed?
When weathered or eroded rocks and dead sea creatures are transported and deposited in layers.
Characteristics of sedimentary
Distinctive layering or bedding
contain fossils
Examples of sedimentary
Coal, sandstone, limestone, slitstone
How are igneous rocks formed?
When molten rock (magma) cools
If magma cools slowly underground it forms intrusive rocks - large crystals.
Quickly above ground is extrusive rocks - small crystals
Characteristics of igneous
high melting points and low resistance to flow
can either be glassy or coarse
hard to dissolve
Examples of igneous
Obsidian, granite, diorite, basalt
How are metamorphic rocks formed?
When sedimentary or igneous rocks are changed by extreme pressure and/or extreme heat.
Change causes the rocks to change their minerals or crystal structure
Characteristics of metamorphic
highly resistant to erosion
Examples of metamorphic
slate, marble, quartzite
What is upland landscape?
An area of high or hilly land
What is lowland landscape?
Area of land that is low in relation to surrounding country.
Near or below sea-level.
Define the term relief
Height above sea level
How do contour lines describe the landscape?
Lines closer together = area very steep/hilly
Lines further apart = area is flat, no hills or mountains
What is a dip slope?
A gentle increase in elevation over a longer distance
What is a scarp slope?
A steep, sudden increase in elevation over a shorter distance
