Chap 16 Flashcards
(19 cards)
Amplitude
Maximum displacement from zero of any periodic phenomenon.
Frequency
Number of occurrences in a unit of time.
What kind of wave is sound?
Longitudinal.
Resonance
Large motion of a system due to excitation.
Standing Wave
A wave whose nodes are stationary.
Node
Point in a medium or field that remains unchanged when acted upon by more than one disturbance simultaneously.
Antinode
Point at which the substance is at maximum displacement when a wave passes through.
Beat
Oscillation in amplitude of complex wave.
Consonance
Complex sound wave perceived as chord.
Dissonance
Complex sound wave perceived as unpleasant.
Fundamental Frequency
Lowest frequency sounded by an instrument.
Overtones
Sound waves of higher frequency than the fundamental.
Speed of Sound in Air at Room Temp.
343 m/s
Room Temp.
20C or 68F
Closed Pipe Resonances
1/4 3/4 5/4 …
Open Pipe Resonances
1/2 2/2 3/2…
Beat Frequency
F1-F2
Velocity at Different Temp.s
v=343 m/s + (.60 x *C)
Doppler Shift
Decrease (or increase) in wavelength as the scourge and detector of waves move toward (or away from) each other.
