Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is the scientific process?
A systematic approach to research.
What is a theory?
A process that looks at why nature works the way it does.
How is a law different from a theory?
A law looks at how nature works while a theory looks out why nature works that way.
What is the definition of Chemistry?
The study of matter and the interactions that occur.
Definition of force
A push or pull on matter
What are the different types of representations?
Particle level, symbolic, and macroscale.
What is a mixture?
A combination of 2 or more pure substances.
What is a pure substance?
Matter that has a constant composition.
What does separation by physical methods mean?
Pure substances can be separated from eachother by not altering the substance.
What is a homogenous mixture?
A mixture that is the same throughout.
What is on heterogenous mixture?
A mixture that isn’t uniform throughout.
What is A compound?
A combination of 2 or more elements.
What is on element?
A combination of 2 or more atoms.
What is a physical property?
Something that can be measured without changing the physical makeup.
What is chemical property?
Something that can be measured by changing the chemical makeup.
Examples of physical property?
Mass or volume
Examples of chemical property
Ionization energy or reactivity
What is an intensive property?
Measurement that isn’t based on the matters size
What is extensive property?
A measurement that is based on the matters size
Examples of intensive property
Temperature or density
Examples of extensive property
Mass or volume
What is macroscopic property?
A observation that needs numerous particles present
What is microscopic property?
A observation that only needs one particle
Examples of macroscopic property
Density, mass, volume, temperature
