- Listen to instruction before the start of the experiment & ask teacher if unsure.
- Tie up hair , and wear covered shoes.
- Wear safety goggles when heating chemicals.
- Report all incidents and spillage to the teacher. Do not take any chemical out of the lab.
What is an independent variable?
Variable that is changed in the experiment.
What is a dependent variable?
Variable that is measured in the experiment.
(depends on the independent variable)
What is accuracy?
How close reading is to the value of quantity.
What is precision?
How close readings are to each other.
What is the function of the barrel?
To raise the flame to a suitable height for burning.
What is the function of the collar?
To control the amount of air entering the burner by opening/closing the air hole.
What is the function of the air hole?
To allow air to enter the burner.
What is the function of the base?
To provide support so that the burner does not topple.
What is the function of the rubber tubing?
To transfer gas from the gas tap to the burner.
State all characteristics of a luminous flame.
- Produced when air hole is closed.
- Visible yellow flame.
- Produce soot.
- Unsteady flame.
- Burns weaker.
State all characteristics of a non-luminous flame.
- Produced when air hole is opened.
- Blue flame (can’t be seen).
- No soot produced.
- Steady flame.
- Burns hotter.
