1st ROTC was established in UP

Commonwealth Act I (National Defense Act) was signed giving ROTC instruction a legal basis. All ROTC units were places under the Philippine Army’s supervision and control.
1936
Pre. Quezon issued the National Defense Act through Executive Order #207. ROTC will be a compulsory course in all colleges and universities. Their graduates will serve as a pool from which the Philippine Army’s officers can be drawn.
1939
Significant number of ROTC graduates played an important role in the defense of the country during WWII.
1944
Pres. Marcos signed PD 1706, National Service Law making national service obligatory for all citizens of the country. It has 3 components: civic welfare services, law enforcement services, and military services.
1980
Pres. Aquino signed memorandum order #11, suspending the implementation of NSL.
1986
Expanded ROTC was introduced. It has the same components as NSL. However, it is no longer a requirement for students
1996
Mark Welson Chua, a 2nd year Engineering student-cadet officer of UST exposed the corruption & anomalies in the University’s ROTC Unit.
2002
