Chapter 1 Flashcards
(54 cards)
Chemistry
Study of matter, its properties, the changes that matter undergoes, and energy associated with these changes
Matter
Anything with mass and volume
Composition
Types and amounts of simpler substances that make up a sample of matter
Properties
Characteristics that give a substance unique properties
Solid
Fixed shape and volume
Liquid
Varying shape and fixed volume. Has an upper surface.
Gas
Varying shape and volume. No surface
Physical Properties
Properties a substance shows by itself without interacting with another. Ex) color, melting point, boiling point, density
Chemical Properties
Properties a substance shows as it interacts with, or transforms into other substances. A change in identity. Ex) Flammability, corrosiveness
How are physical changes reversed?
Change in temperature. Changes of state are physical (form changes, not composition)
Can chemical changes be reversed by temperature?
No
What property is this? Frost forms as temperature drops?
Physical
What property is this? Cornstalk grows from a seed
Chemical
What property is this? A match ignites
Chemical
What property is this? Perspiration evaporates
Physical
What property is this? A silver fork tarnishes
Chemical
Energy
Ability to do work
Potential energy
Due to position of object(stored energy)
Kinetic Energy
Due to movement of object
What energy states are more stable?
Lower energy states are more stable and are favored over higher energy states
Energy cannot be created or destroyed. What can happen?
It is conserved and can be converted from one form to another
What is mass measured in and what is the abbreviation?
Kilograms(kg)
What is length measured in and what is the abbreviation?
Meters(m)
What is time measured in and what is the abbreviation?
Seconds(s)
