Chapter 1 Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is the nucleus?
A large organelle present in all eukaryotic cells, separated from the cytoplasm by a double membrane.
What does the nucleus contain?
DNA, which is arranged into chromosomes.
What are chromosomes made of?
DNA and proteins, collectively referred to as chromatin.
What is the nuclear membrane also known as?
The nuclear envelope.
What are nuclear pores?
Channels that allow mRNA and ribosomes to travel out of the nucleus and allow enzymes and signalling molecules to move in.
What is the function of the nucleolus?
It is the site of ribosome production.
Fill in the blank: The nucleus contains a region known as the _______.
nucleolus
True or False: The nucleus is only found in prokaryotic cells.
False
What is chromatin?
A complex of DNA and proteins found in chromosomes.
What separates the nucleus from the cytoplasm?
A double membrane.
What is the liquid within the nucleus called?
Nucleoplasm.
