Q

If a balance has two items on either side, and they level out at the same exact level, what can we say about these objects:

a. The two objects have the same mass.
b. The mass of the two objects combined is equal to that of the balance.
c. The torque of the balance is oscillating.
d. The net torque on the balance = 0.

Q

Two masses are placed on a seesaw and properly balanced. Mass #1 (40 kg) is 1 m away from the fulcrum (center), while the second mass (26 kg) is 2 m away from the fulcrum. Where must we place a 3rd mass (78 lbs) for the seesaw to remain balanced?

a. Closer to mass #2.
b. Closer to mass #1.
c. On top of the fulcrum.
d. This is not possible, because mass 3 is much greater than mass 1 or 2.

A

c - on top of the fulcrum.

Since this seesaw is already in balance, the only way to maintain the balance is to place the new mass directly on the fulcrum (center) as it’s weight will be distributed evenly between the sides.
