Chapter 1 Flashcards
(35 cards)
What is fluidity?
The ability to flow.
Which state of matter has high fluidity?
Gases.
What is viscosity?
A liquid’s resistance against flow.
How can highly viscous liquids be used?
To reduce friction (Lubrication).
What is evaporation?
A surface phenomenon that occurs just before the liquid starts to boil.
What affects the ease of evaporation?
Weaker intermolecular forces.
Define volatility.
The tendency of a substance to evaporate.
How does the boiling point relate to volatility?
The higher the force of attraction (lower boiling point), the higher the volatility.
What is the melting point?
The temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid.
Compare the melting point of impure and pure substances.
Melting point of impure substance > Melting point of pure substance.
What is the boiling point?
The temperature at which a liquid boils when the pressure of the gas created above the liquid equals atmospheric pressure.
Compare the boiling point of impure and pure substances.
Boiling point of impure substance > Boiling point of pure substance.
What is the freezing point?
The temperature at which a liquid freezes to change state into a solid.
Compare the freezing point of impure and pure substances.
Freezing point of impure substance > Freezing point of pure substance.
Define condensation.
The physical process where a substance transitions from a gaseous state to a liquid state.
What is sublimation?
The transition of a substance directly from the solid to the gas state.
What is deposition?
A transition where a substance changes from a gas to a solid state.
Define lattice.
A regular three-dimensional arrangement that forms a giant covalent structure.
What is kinetic particle energy?
Energy possessed by the state of matter.
What is intermolecular space?
The space between 2 atoms or molecules.
What is the change of state from solid to liquid called?
Melting.
What is the change of state from liquid to gas called?
Evaporation or Vaporisation.
What is the change of state from gas to liquid called?
Condensation or Liquefaction.
What is the change of state from liquid to solid called?
Freezing or Solidification.
