Chapter 1/2-living organisms Flashcards
(22 cards)
what is movement
an action by an organism or part of an organism that causes a change in position or place.
what is respiration
the chemical reactions that break down nutrient molecules in living cells to release energy for metabolism.
what is sensitivity
the ability to detect or sense stimuli within the internal or external environment, and make appropriate responses.
what is growth
a permanent increase in size and dry mass by an increase in cell number.
reproduction
the process that makes more of the same organism. there is Sexual and asexual reproduction .
excretion
the removal from organisms of toxic materials such as waste products from metabolism, and substances that are in excess.
nutrition
the taking in of materials for energy, growth and development.
species
organisms that are classified into different groups and are able to reproduce and make fertile offsprings.
3 ways to show relatedness of organisms:
-morphology(visible feature)
-DNA base sequences
-study of structures within cells
-whether organisms can breed together to produce fertile offsprings.
features of mammals
-warm blooded
-fur on skin
-four limbs
-visible ears
features of reptiles
-scaly skin
-lay eggs with rubbery shells on land
-cold blooded
features of birds
-have wings
-warm blooded
-lay eggs with hard shells on land
-feathers
-beak
amphibians
-smooth,moist skin
-cold blooded
-lay eggs in water without shells
-
fish
-cold blooded
-breathe through gills
-lay eggs without shells
what is a root hair cell?
it absorbs mineral ions and water form the soil.
xylem vessel
supports and conducts water through the plant.
what is lignin?
it is in most plants cells to help them stay rigid
palisade mesophyll cell
photosynthesis
nucleus
contains the DNA ,which controls the cells activities
cytoplasm.
a gel like substance, made of water and dissolved solutes, which supports the internal cell structures.
ribosomes
site of protein synthesis
chloroplast
contains green pigments of chlorophyll, to absorb light energy.
-conatins enzymes needed for photosynthesis,
