Chapter 1 Flashcards
Matter
Physical material of the universe, anything that has mass and occupies space
Chemistry
The study of matter and the changes that matter undergoes
Property
Any characteristic that allows us to recognize a particular type of matter and to distinguish it from other types
Elements
Substances that cannot be decomposed into simpler substances, only composed of one kind of atom
Atoms
Small building blocks of matter
Gas
No fixed v or shape
Liquid
Distinct v, no fixed shape
Solid
Definite shape and volume
Pure substance
Matter that has distinct properties and a composition that does not vary from sample to sample
Compounds
Substances composed of 2 or more elements
Heterogenous mixture
Diff composition throughout
Homo mixture
Uniform throughout, solutions
Physical properties
Can be observed w/o changing the Id and composition of a substance. Color Density Melting pt Boiling pt
Chemical properties
Describe a way a substance reacts to form other substances
Intensive properties
Do not depend on amount, density, temp
Extensive properties
Depend on amount of sample, mass and volume
Physical change
Changes physical appearance but not composition, changes of state
Chemical change
A substance is transformed into a chemically diff substance, reactions
Mass
Measure of the amount of material in an object
Kelvin
K= C + 273.15
Temp
C= 5/9 (F-32) F= 9/5(C) +32
Density
Mass/volume
Precision
Measure of how closely individual measurements agree with one another
Accuracy
How close the number agrees to correct value
