Chapter 1 Flashcards
Atomic theory
The theory that all matter is composed of small, indestructible particles called atoms.
Chemistry
The science of understanding what matter does by studying what atoms and molecules do.
Hypothesis
An explanation for an observation. A good one is falsifiable (can be tested and might be wrong.)
Experiment
Intentional observations done to prove or disprove a hypothesis.
Law of conservation of mass
Matter is neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction.
Observation
Seeing something that leads to a hypothesis.
Scientific Law
A quick statement that compacts previous observation and predicts future ones.
Scientific method
Way of learning that emphasizes observation and experimentation to understand the world.
Scientific theory
Are tested and proved by experiments. Well-test scientific theories are as close to the truth in science than anything else.
