Information Systems
Any organized combination of people hardware software communication networks data resources and policies/procedures that stores retrieves transforms and disseminates information.
System
A set of interrelated components with a clearly defined boundary working together to achieve a common set of objectives by accepting inputs and producing outputs in an organized process
Elements of a system
Input, Output, Processing, Storage, Control examples: keyboards, video displays, CPU, flash drives
Hardware Resources
machines and media ( computers, monitors etc., floppy discs etc
Software resources
programs ( system and application software) and procedures
Competitive Advantage
A product or service that an organizations customers place greater value on than similar offerings from a competitor
Porter’s five forces
Rivalry, buyer power, supplier power, threat of substitutes, threat of new entrants
Business Strategies/ competitive strategies

Input technologies
speech recognition optical scanning digital cameras
Computer storage fundementals
data are processed and stored in a computer system through the presence or absence of electronic or magnetic signals in computers circulatory system
Binary representation
bit- 0 or 1, 8 bits= 1 byte
Storage capacities
kilo mega giga tera
CPU
central processing unit ( control unit/arithmetic logic unit (alu))
Semiconductor memory
RAM/ROM RAM is volatile
RFID
radio frequency identification - storage technology for tracking
Computer Software
the set of instrux. that the hardware executes to carry out specific tasks
Types of software
Application and system
Application Software
performs info processing tasks for end users ( ex. word processing, spreadsheets, databases, web browsers, email)
COTS
commercial off the shelf software (Application software/ example: office suite, adobe acrobat)
