In what common way do states interact with each other?
Through conflict
What are the five permanent members of the UN?

Sovereignty:
Independent authority over a territory without fear from outside interference
What are some tools for sovereign states?
Military, money, laws, self imposed limits
What treaty helped create sovereign states?
Westphalia Peace Treaty of 1648
Nation
Large group of people bound together by a common interest
Ways nations are bounded
Through religion, language, cultural, etc.
State:
A permanent population with a defined border and sovereign government
What are some violent conflicts we face?
International trade disruption, environmental damage, require substantial human and material resources, etc.
What are some ways to alleviate conflict?
Reduce poverty and inequality, address injustices, and conflict is INEVITABLE
Foreign policy:
Actions involving official decisions and communication (public and secret) with other states officials
Diplomacy:
Practice of managing international relations by negotiations
IGOs:
Organizations of many states &NGOs cooperation to create strategic and political solutions
What are some IGO examples?
NATO, OPEC, APEC, BRICS, IMF
Benefits of IGOs?
Tackle large problems, pursue economic growth, keep peace, and increase collective responsibility
Drawbacks of IGOs?
Internal political disagreements, political & ideological differences, bureaucratic delays, corruptions, incompetence
NGOs:
Public or private organizations that influence foreign policy, raise international concern, offer aid, give voice, support important programs
How do NGOs grow?
Democracy improvements, GLOBALIZATION, complexity of international system, new technology, improvements in communication
