qualities of poetry
Stanza’s, Uses meter, Figurative language, Rhymes, Sound devices, Rhythm.
Epic Poems
Tell lengthy stories with a hero and they are dramatic. An example of this is Beowulf.
Narrative Poems
Not dramatic, tells stories about day to day life actions. An example of this is the wife’s lement.
Lyric Poems
used to be a musical type of poem, not so much anymore. Expresses the emotions of the speaker.
Dramatic Poems
Relies heavily on dramatic elements such as monologues and dialogues. Told from someone other than the actual poet.
Stanza
A break before and after a group of words or sentences, sometimes just a group of sentences.
Rhyme Scheme
A pattern of end rhymes at the end of a poem.
End Rhyme
Ending of lines that have similar sounding words.
Slant Rhyme
Words with similar vowel sounds but do not rhyme.
Internal Rhyme
Rhymes within one line
Caesure
It means pause
Meter
Counts syllables or stress
Rhythm
Interplay of stress
Feet
Smallest metrical unit
Stress
The emphasis that falls on certain syllables but not others
Figurative Language
language that engages the imagination.
Sound Devices
any poetic device that engages the way you view a poem or hear a poem.
Figurative language examples
Metaphor- he was the guardian of fate… Simile- he is like a bear with wings.
Sound device example
Alliteration- the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of a word.
Monologue
only one person speaks or tells the story.
Is Beowoulf monologue or dialogue
It is a monologue
Elegiac Tone
Talks about death or mourning.
The Seafarer
Talks about death coming. The Seafarer talks about his past times sailing in the ocean and his past hardships while traveling at sea.
The Wife’s Lament
Talks about death coming. The wife talks about the hardship of being exiled and being left behind.
