Chapter 1 Flashcards
The study of life (31 cards)
What are the characteristics of life ?
Organization Require materials and energy Reproduce and develop Respond to stimulus Maintain homeostasis Adapt
What are the levels of biological organizations?
Atoms Molecules Cells Tissue Organs Organ systems Organisms Population Community Ecosystems Biosphere
All members of one species in a given location is called what?
Population
What does metabolism mean?
Chemical reaction in a cell
What does photosynthesis mean?
Process by plants that make their own food
Why do organisms reproduce?
To pass their genetic information included in genes
What does Genes mean?
Unit of DNA
What does mutations mean?
When DNA is changed
What does Development mean?
A series of steps and organism goes through to become an adult.
What does responding to stimulus mean?
Reaction to external and internal events
What does Homeostasis mean?
To ability to maintain a stable internal environment
What does adaptation mean?
Allowing an organism to exist in a particular environment
What does evolution mean?
Is a accumulation of adaptions over a long period of time
What does taxonomy mean?
Process of naming and classifying things such as animals and plants in a larger system, based on their similarly and differences
What does species mean?
A group of closely related organisms that are similar to each other
What are the classification of categories of organisms?
Domain Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
What are the three domains?
Archaea
Bacteria
Eukar
What does domain arcgaea and domain bacteria have in common?
The both contain prokaryotic organisms
they both don’t have a nucleus
And they are both single cell organisms
What makes Domain Eukar differ from Domain Archaea and Domain Bacteria?
Contains a nucleus
What are plants well known as?
The mulitcellular photosynthesizers of the world.
What organism are multicellular and ingest their food ?
Animals
What are the steps of a scientific method?
Observation Form a hypothesis Make a prediction Test the prediction Use results to form new hypothesis
What does Inductive reasoning mean?
Is a logical process in which multiple premises all believe true or found true most of the time.
Example
“ the coin in pulled out of the bag is a penny, therefore all the coins in the bag are pennies”
What does deductive reasoning mean?
Allows for a development of a prediction, of what may occur as a result of the experiment.
Example
All apples are a fruit, a granny Smith is a type of apple, therefore the granny smith is a fruit.
