Chapter 1 Flashcards
Exam revision (29 cards)
What are all living things and organisms made up of?
Cells
What is the smallest basic unit of life?
Cell
How can the cells vary and depending on what?
Cells can vary greatly in shape and size depending on the function they perform.
What is the cells size? Give an exeption if there’s any.
Most cells are very small far smaller than 1mm in diameter. The main exeption is ostrich’s egg which is considered to be the largest single cell.
What is the largest single cell?
Ostrich’s egg
All the cells are surrounds by a very thin membrane called?
Cell membrane
What is the job of a cell membrane
1) It surrounds the cell’s cytoplasm, holding the cell together and giving it it’s shape
2) it protects and supports the cell
3) it controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell
What is the cytoplasm?
It’s jellylike material that fills the cell
What does a cytoplasm contain?
It contains many tiny sebcellular structures called organelles.
What is the largest organelle in most of the cells?
Nucleus
How can we refer to the nucleus and the cytoplasm together?
Protoplasm
What is a protoplasm?
Both nucleus and cytoplasm together
What is the other name for a cell membrane?
Plasma membrane
Which of the following is selectively permeable?
1) cell membrane
2) cell wall
Cell membrane
Why is the cell membrane considered selectively permeable?
Because it allows certain substances to pass through it
Ex: oxygen, water, and other nutrients.
And the cell’s waste products are allowed out.
What is the job of the cell wall?
It protects the cells and provide them with extra support.
What is the cell wall?
Its a thick and tough outer layer that protects the cell and provides it with extra support.
Which of the following is considered fully permeable?
1) Cell wall
2) cell membrane
Cell wall
Where does a cytoplasm take place?
It fills the empty space inside the cells
What does a cytoplasm consist of?
Water Salt Sugar Enzymes Lipids Proteins And other substances
What can the lipids and proteins inside the cytoplasm be used for?
Building the cell structure such as membrane
What is the enzymes inside the cytoplasm responsible for?
It controls metabolic reactions inside the cells
The nucleus is surrounded by lipid bilayer membrane called?
Nuclear envelope
What is the job of the nuclear envelope?
It controls the exchange of substance between the nucleus and the cytoplasm through a very small openings called nuclear pores.
