Chapter 1&4 Flashcards

1
Q

Explain how a neurotransmitter goes through a neuron

A

Through dendrites; to the soma which has the neucleus. Then trough the axon, which is covered in myelin sheath, into axon terminals and the terminal buttons

Q

Definition of glial cells

A

Not part of the neuron, but has an important role in supporting the neurons: basically clean the neurons and around them

Q

Explain the PNS tree

A

Peripheral nervous system-> somantic nervous system (sensory and motor neurons) & Autonomic nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system)

Q

What are the 8 steps of the scientific method

A
1 identify area of research
2 collect information
3 form hypothesis
4 design research method to test hypothesis
5 collect data and analyse
6 draw a conclusion
7 accept or reject hypothesis
8 report findings and test conclusion

Q

What are the overriding principles

A

Participants may refuse to take part in experiment, researchers must have respect for participants, participants must not be identified in any way

Q

What’s the difference between sensory neurons and motor neurons

A

The sensory neuron send information to the CNS; if you burn your hand the sensory neurons will send the message that it is being burnt. And the motor neuron will engage a response by carrying signals from the brain to the muscle fibre to move the hand away from the heat

Q

What does the sympathetic NS do

A

It is the neurons that give you the fight-flight-freeze response
