Chapter 1: An Orientation Flashcards
(22 cards)
What is Anatomy?
The study of the structure and shape of the body, and their relationship to one another.
What is Gross Anatomy?
Large, Easily Observable
Microscopic Anatomy
too small to see with naked eye, microscop needed, cells and tissue
Physiology
study of the body and how it works
What are the six levels of structural organization?
- atom
- cells
- tissues
- organ
- organ system
- organism
Integumentary System (what’s included and it’s function)
- hair, skin, nails
- waterproof, regulates body temperature through sweat, produces vitamin D, protects deeper tissue
Skeletal System (what’s included and it’s function)
- bones, cartilage, ligaments
- provide muscle attachment for movement, protects vital organs, site of blood cell formation, stores minerals
Muscular System (what’s included and it’s function)
- muscles and tendons
- produces movement of bones, produces heat through shivering
Nervous System (what’s included and it’s function)
- brain, spinal cord, nerves, sensory receptors
- responds to change, change is detected through sensory receptors, sends messages to central nervous system
Endocrine System (what’s included and it’s function)
- hormones
- growth, reproduction, nutrients
- secretes hormones into blood
Cardiovascular System (what’s included and it’s function)
- heart, blood vessels
- heart pumps blood, vessels transport blood to tissues
- blood transports oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, hormones, and white blood cells
Lymphatic System (what’s included and it’s function)
- lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, lymphoid organs
- returns leaked fluids to cardiovascular system, cleanses the blood, houses white blood cells
Respiratory System (what’s included and it’s function)
- nasal passages, pharynx, bronchi, lungs, trachea, larynx, lungs
- gas exchange through lungs to supply body with oxygen and remove carbon dioxide
Digestive System (what’s included and it’s function)
- mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines, rectum
- break down food, allows nutrients to be absorbed into blood, eliminates indigestible material as feces
Urinary System (what’s included and it’s function)
- kidneys, ureters, blatter, urethra
- eliminates nitrogenous waste, maintains ph health, regulates water and electrolyte balance, helps regulate blood pressure
- water and electrolyte balance is released to blood pressure
Reproductive System (what’s included and it’s function)
- testes (males), ovaries (female)
- produce offspring
Maintaining Boundaries
keep insides inside, and outsides outside
Necessary Life Functions
- maintaining boundaries
- movement
- responsiveness
- digestion
- metabolism
- excretion
- reproduction
- growth and repair
Responsiveness
- ability to sense change and change
- nervous system
Digestion
- ability to breakdown and absorb nutrients
Metabolism
- all chemical reactions in the body
- breakdown complex molecules, build large molecules, produces energy (atp), regulated by hormones
Excretion
eliminates waste from metabolic reactions through urine, feces, sweat
