How did Henry’s background make demands on him?

A
  • Henry Tudor was a stranger in England when he ascended the throne, since winning the throne by conquest
  • Had virtually no discernible claim to the throne since it was through this maternal side of his family
  • Henry had lived abroad since he was 14
  • Henry became the Lancastrian claimant only because there was no one else who could fulfil the role, however it was victory on the battlefield alone which had brought him to the throne

Henry’s character and aims

A
  • From 1485, Henry’s main purpose was to ensure that he kept his throne and his primary aim was to consolidate his power.
  • Henry dated his reign from 21 August 1485, the day before the Battle of Bosworth, therefore ensuring that anyone who fought in the Yorkist side could be claimed a traitor.
  • He publicly rewarded many of his key supporters
  • Arranged for supporters to detain the Earl of Warwick, who had a greater claim to the throne.
  • He made key appointments to his Council and household

Consolidation of the throne

A
  • Arranged for his coronation to take place before the first meeting of his Parliament making his right to the throne based on hereditary right
  • Parliamentary Acts of Attainder against Yorkists who had fought against him in Bosworth and had their property forfeited to the Crown
  • Married Elizabeth of York, therefore unifying the two houses and created the Tudor rose as propaganda for the united houses. Also had a son, Arthur, to create a stronger dynasty

How did Henry establish the Tudor dynasty?

  • Aimed to ensure the succession of his line to the throne.
  • Ensured law and order by keeping control over the nobility who had engaged in bitter power struggles
  • Improved the Crown’s financial position
  • Stabilised the dynasty by securing the recognition of foreign powers

Viscount Lovell and the Staffords, 1486

A
  • Was the first (rather minor) rising against Henry.
  • Led by Francis, Viscount Lovell- a key supporter of Richard III.
  • Lovell tried to raise a rebellion in the North Riding of Yorkshire, simultaneously, Stafford tried to raise forces against Henry in the Midlands.
  • Stafford soon captured and executed.
  • There was little enthusiasm form the Yorkists to rebel.
