Chapter 1: Introduction Flashcards
(19 cards)
What mammals acquire echolocation (natural sonar)?
Bats and marine mammals
What is the scientific nomenclature called?
Binomial (2-part) system
What is the genus for most long legged rabbits?
Leporidae
What’s the scientific nomenclature for blacktail jack rabbit?
Lepus californicus
How does subspecies arise from?
Subspecies is created due to geographical variation within a species
Give an example of subspecies in Lepus californicus.
lives in deserts, large eared and pale-coloured = L. c. deserticola
lives on coastal areas, small eared and dark-coloured = L. c. californicus
What are the 8 classifications in Carl Linaeus’ taxonomy?
Domain, Kindgom, Phylum, Order, Class, Family, Genus, Species
what do family names end with?
-idae
What do all subfamilies end with?
-inae
What is parallelism?
When 2 closely related species have similar modes of life for which similar structural adaptations are evolved
What is convergence?
When 2 distant species share similar life styles and adaptations
Give an example of convergence in moles.
Golden mole of Africa & marsupial moles of Australia
Belong to different infraclasses, but share similar features
What are “primitive”, “specialised” and “advanced” repeatedly used in?
In chapters of Order and Familiy
What is a primitive mammal?
One that hasn’t departed far from ancestral type/ maintain lots of ancestral characteristics
What is a monotreme?
mammal that lays eggs (eg platypus)
What is a specialised mammal?
Characteristics departed strongly from ancestors due to a different life mode
Why is a horse considered a specialised mammal?
In order to be speed afoot and feed on grass - their limbs elongated, lost all digits other than the 3rd, cheek teeth developed complicated occlusal surfaces - became so different with primitive mammals
What is an advanced mammal?
Used in comparison of different members of the taxonomy group/evolutionary line
How is Big brown bats more advanced than early Eocene bats?
Although both specialise for flight, brown bats have more refinements in flight apparatus - more perfectly adapted to fly
