Spars
The main, lengthwise pieces of the wing.
Ribs
The crosswise pieces that give the wings their shape.
Skids
Long, thin runners, like a
pair of skis.
Elevator
A small moving section attached to a fixed wing to help control up-and-down movement of the aircraft.
Wing Warping
Twisting the tips of the wings with a series of cables.
Yaw
The sidewise movement of an aircraft.
Airfoil
A wing’s profile.
The Center of Pressure
The focal point of lift.
Relative Wind
The flow of air over the airfoil.
Angle of Attack
The angle between the relative wind and the airfoil. (If you’re confused use figure 1.3 on page 30)
Bid
An offer or a proposal, with a price attached.
Strut
A vertical post.
Bracing
The support, that was strung diagonally between the struts.
Lateral
Sideways.
Pitch
The movement, up or down, from the nose of the aircraft.
Canard Configuration
Another name for an elevator that sits in front of the wings.
Sateen
A cotton fabric woven like satin with a glossy surface.
