Chapter 1 Life Science Flashcards
(23 cards)
A way of learning about the natural world
Science
the process of using one or more of your senses to gather information
Observing
An observation that deals with a number or amount
Quantitative Observation
An observation that deals with characteristics that cannot be expressed in numbers
Qualitative Observation
the process of making an interpretation based on observations and prior knowledge
inferring
the process of forecasting what will happen based on past experiences or evidence
predicting
the process of grouping together items that are alike in some way
classifying
the process of making representations of complex objects or processes
making models
a model that accurately shows the proportions between it’s parts
scale models
the study of living things
Life Science
the study of life
Biology
A living thing
organism
the process of change that causes an organism to become more complex during its lifetime
Development
the way that an organism is put together as a whole
Structure
the process that enable an organism to survive
Functions
Working together to meet the needs of an organism, as structure & function do
Complementary
the diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and propose explanations based on evidence they gather
Scientific Inquiry
A possible explanations for a set of observations or answer to a scientific question; must be testable
Hypothesis
A factor in an experiment that can change
Variable
An experiment in which only one variable is manipulated at a time
Controlled Experiment
the factor that a scientist changes during an experiment; also called independent variable
Manipulated Variable
the factor that changes as a result of changes to the manipulated, or independent, variable in an experiment; also called dependent variable
Responding Variable
the part of an experiment to which you can compare the results of other tests
Control
