Chapter 1 Me Flashcards
Ventilators
are used to provide controlled ventilation.
Ventilators can be used in ?
operating theatre, intensive care unit, during transport of critically ill patient, also at home
Classification of ventilators
1- The method of cycling
2- Inspiratory phase of gas control
3- Source of power
4- Suitability for use in:
5- Suitability for pediatric practice:
6- Method of operation:
7- Sophistication:
8- Function
Classification of ventilators
What the Type of method of cycling
A) Volume cycling
B) Time cyclin
C) pressure cycling
D) flow changes
Volume cycling is ?
when predetermined tidal volume is reached during inspiration the ventilator changes to exhalation.
Time cycling is ?
when predetermined inspiratory time is reached ,the ventilator changes to exhalation.
pressure cyclingis ?
when predetermined pressure is reached during inspiration the ventilator changed to exhalation.
flow changes?
when predetermined flow is reached during inspiration the ventilator changes to exhalation
The Inspiratory phase of gas control :
a) Volume: preset volume is delivered.
b) Pressure: preset pressure is not exceeded.
The Source of power it can be?
electric \pneumatic.
Suitability for use in:
theatre\ICU.
Method of operation Are :
a) Pressure generator:
b) Flow generator:
What difference between Pressure generator and Flow generator?
-Pressure generator:
The ventilator produces inspiration by generating constant and predetermined pressure. By bellow or a moderate weight produce the pressure. b) Flow -Flow generator:
The ventilator produces inspiration by delivered predetermined flow of gas. By a piston ,heavy weight or compressed gas produce the flow.
Differences Between the pressure generator and flow generator ventilators/
1-Changes in lung compliance
2-Leak in the system
-Pressure Generator
1-Can not compensate
2-Can compensate (to a degree)
-Flow Generator
1-Can compensate (to a degree)
2-Can not compensate
Sophistication: new ventilator can function in many of above modes….
(SIMV,PS,CPAP)
Type of ventilator depends on 3 function is ?
a)Minute volume divider: fresh gas flow powers the ventilators
b)Bag squeezer :replace the hand of ventilation of MaplesonD or circle system.
c)Lightweight portable: powered by compressed gas and consists of control unit and patient valve.
What the Characteristics of ideal ventilation?
1- Simple, portable, robust, economical to purchase and use
2- It should be versatile ,supply tidal volume up to 1500ml,with respiratory rate up to 60\min. It can deliver any gas or vapour mixture. The addition of PEEP should be possible.
3- It should be monitor the airway pressure, inspired and exhaled minute, TV,RR and inspired oxygen concentration
4- There should be facilities to provide humidification and drugs can be nebulized.
5- Disconnection ,high airway pressure, power failure alarm should be present.
6- There should be facility to provide other ventilator modes.
7- easy to clean and sterilize.
