How does the distinction of quantity and quality of change relate to the study of politics?

A

Things are ever changing in this 2.0 world. It is changing very quickly in a quantitative respect but also changing in a qualitative respect. This change has direct relation to the study of politics. We can see it through the change that social media brought. As an example look at Ghonim in Egypt, he helped topple the previous regime through Facebook. All sorts of changes relate to the study of politics, especially the recent change that social media brought about. Change is the only constant.

A

The thing about history that has made democratization important to our study is that it shows that democratization is a goal worth fighting for. Great democracies have come out as unintended results of historical events. History has created democracies, therefore making the process of democratization and the spread of democratic ideas important to our study.

What has changed with identity politics? What has remained the same?

A

One thing that has changed about identity politics is religion. Religion was at one point a one of the most hugely disputed issues in Europe. Now it is much lower there and it no longer separates people on a politically important level. Other parts of the world show great religious issues that majorly define politics there. So in that way, religion has changed with identity politics in some places, but it has also remained with identity politics in other places.

What is the role of government in security?

A

The safeguarding of our vital geopolitical interests and the meeting of social, economic, and environmental needs makes people feel secure. Also the security of other nations allows for people to feel secure in their own nation. The role of the government in security is to ensure both national and human security. Human security requires governments to be resilient.

How do optimists and pessimists differ in their view of globalization?
How do global challenges and domestic responses relate?

A

Optimists view obviously view globalization as a positive thing allowing for great economic development. We see that in BRICS. Because of globalization, pessimists see it’s social and economic failures. Pessimists see the worlds poverty and terrible living conditions. They see all the things we in the west have and take for granted. In our globalized world today, global challenges relate directly with domestic responses. In a way the world has seemed to shrink. One example is 9/11. The attack on September 11 had emediate affect on not only America but also on surrounding nations.
