The number of days a person stays in a healthcare facility
Terminal Illness
An illness that will eventually cause death
Chronic
Conditions that last a long time; maybe even a lifetime
Home Health Care
Care provided in a persons home
Diagnoses
Conditions determined by a doctor
Assisted Living
Facilities or residences for people who need some help with daily care
Dementia
Serious loss of mental abilities
Adult Day Services
For people who need some assistance and supervision during certain hours
Acute Care
Is 24-hour skilled care given in hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers for people who require short-term, immediate care for illnesses or injuries
Subacute Care
Care given in hospitals or long-term care facilities
Outpatient Care
Is usually given to people who have had treatments, procedures, or surgeries and need short-term skilled care
Rehabilitation
Is care given by specialists
Hospice Care
Is given in facilities or homes for people who have approximately six months or less to live
Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
Bathing, skin, nail, and hair care, mouth care, and assistance with walking, eating and drinking, dressing, transferring, and elimination
Catheters
Thin tubes inserted into the body to drain or inject fluids
Policy
A course of action that should be taken every time a certain situation occurs
Procedure
A method or way of doing something
Cite
Means to find a problem through a survey
Joint Commission
An independent, not-for-profit organization that evaluates and credits healthcare organizations
