Distinguish aided and unaided AAC?

A

Aided is any device, either electronic or non-electronic, that is used to transmit or receive messages.
Unaided is any non-spoken communication or natural forms of communication we use with our bodies such as gestures, eye gaze, facial expressions, and sign language.

What are the four domains of communicative competence and what do they mean?

A

Operational - Cognitive and motor skills required to access the features of the device/system. Learning to use signs and gestures, using low-tech and high-tech devices.
Strategic - Mastering strategies to overcome limitations and barriers encountered during communication.
Linguistic - Must possess adequate expressive and receptive language skills to communicate in various environments and with various partners.
Social - Learns how to use the system/approach to engage in effective social interactions. This means learning the skills used in typical day-to-day speaking.
