Chapter 10 Flashcards
(10 cards)
Mole
The amount of substance that contains 6.02 × 10^23 representative particles of that substance
Avogadro’s Number
The number of representative particles contained in one mole of a substance
Representative particles
The smallest unit a particle can be broken down without a change in composition, usually atoms, molecules or ions
Molar mass
A term used to refer to the mass of a mole of any substance
Avagadro’s hypothesis
Equal volumes of gas at the same temperature and pressure contain equal numbers of particles
Standard temperature and pressure (STP)
The conditions under which the volume of a gas is usually measured, 0°C, 101.3kPa or 1 atm
Molar volume
The volume occupied by one mole of gas at standard temperature and pressure
Percent composition
The percent by mass of each elementary in a compound
Empirical formula
Formula with the lowest whole number ratio of elements in a compound
% by mass of element
(Mass of element/mass of compound) × 100
