Amenorrhea
Loss of the menstral period due to extreme emaciation (abnormally weak or thin)
Anorexia Nervosa (AN)
Binge Eating Disorder (BED)
Includes recurrent binges (1/wk for 3mo), lack of control during, and distress about it. must involve at least 3 of:
*Eating more rapidly than normal
*until uncomfortably full
*alone due to embarassment
*large amounts when not hungry
*disgust, depressed, or very guilty in oneself
Body Mass Index
Stat calculated by taking the individual’s mass (in KG) and dividing it by the square of their height (in M)
Bulimia Nervosa (BN)
Bullimia- From Greek word meaning “Ox Hunger”
Nervosa- For emotional reasons
Diagnostic Crossover
A small prtion of people with AN eventually develop BN and vice versa but less common going BN to AN
Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS)
Residual “Catch-All” diagnostic category that emphasizes the fact that we have way more people with eating disorders than we have information to classify the disorders.
Fat Talk
Tendency for friends (perticularily female friends) to take turns dispariging their bodies to each other.
Lateral Hypothalamus
Part of the hypothalamus that has lesions in animals that lose weight and have no appetite
Night Eating Syndrome
Repetative tendancy to wake up and eat during the night and then get quite upset about it.

Over Evaluation of Appearance
Tendancy to link self-esteem and self-evaluation with thinness.
Purging Disorder
Form of Bulimia that involves self-induced vomiting or laxative use at least once a week for a minimum of 6 months.

Scarlett O’Hara Effect
Eating prior to an outing to appear dainty by eating very little to project femininity.
Social Comparison Orientation
A style that involves judging themselves in relation to others
Thinspiration Effect
Chronic dieters feel thinner after viewing idealized images and it inspires them to diet more.
