Chapter 10: Phylogeny/Systematics Flashcards
(11 cards)
What Systematics?
Classifying organisms based on similarity, biogeography, etc.
What is Taxonomy?
System for naming and classifying species to illustrate evolutionary relationship
What is the binomial nomenclature?
System for naming species
What is a trinomial name?
Includes a subspecies epithet.
How do you define a species?
- common descent
- smallest distinct groupings of organisms sharing a pattern of descent
- members of a species must be able to reproduce.
Geographic range of a species
Its distribution in space.
Evolutionary duration of a species
Its distribution in time.
A worldwide species is
Cosmopolitan
Biological species concept
- sibling species fit here
- lack temporal dimension
- degree of reproductive isolation necessary?
- species that reproduce asexually?
Evolutionary species concept
Single lineage of ancestor-descendant populations that maintain its identity from other lineages. And has own evolutionary tendencies and historical fate.
•sexual and asexual forms as well as fossils
Phylogenetic species concept
An irreducible grouping of organisms distinct from other groupings and within which there is a parental pattern of ancestry and descent.
•asexual and sexual groups covered.
