Chapter 10 Sefinitions Flashcards
(40 cards)
Wave
A disturbance that transfers energy from one point to another without transferring matter
Crest
The highest point in a wave
Trough
The lowest point in a wave
Rest position
The level of water when there are no waves
Wavelength
Distance from one place in a wave to the next similar place on the wave
Amplitude
The wave height from the rest position of the wave to the crest or the depth from rest to the trough
Frequency
The rate of repetition of a wave
Electromagnetic radiation
A wave pattern made of electric and magnetic fields that can travel through empty space
Electromagnetic spectrum
The entire range of electromagnetic radiation
Model
A representation of an object event or process based on our observation of its characteristics and properties
Property
An common attribute to all substances or objects of the same group
Wave model of light
The similarities between the lift and movement of waves in the surface of water to explain several properties of light
Prism
A transparent glass or plastic object with flat polished sides
Visible spectrum
The range of different colours of light
Additive colour theory
White lift is composed of different colours of light
Reflect
Bounce off the object
Subtractive colour theory
Coloured matter selectively absorbs different colours of wavelengths of light
Bioluminescence
The ability of a plant or animal to produce light
Incandescent light
Light that is produced by an object such as metal that is at a very high temperature
Fluorescent light
Light emitted by some substances when they are exposed to electromagnetic radiation
Phosphor
A substance that glows after being exposed to energized particles
Phosphorescence
The ability to store the energy from a source of light and then emit it slowly over a long period
Chemiluminescence
Light produced from a chemical reaction without a rise in temperature
Tribiluminescence
Producing light from friction
